City Council and Bond Election

Filing Ends for November Election

Filing ended September 7 for two San Marcos City Council seats up for election on November 8 in the first fall election for the city.

The City Council formally called the election on Tuesday, August 16. On the City ballot will be the election of two City Council members and general obligation bond propositions for street, fire department, municipal court, park, and sidewalk projects.

Four candidates filed for two seats on the City Council.

Place 3

  • Daniel Guerrero, of 1404 Harper Drive, filed for re-election in Place 3 on Tuesday, August 9. Richard Cruz will serve as his campaign treasurer.

Place 4

  • Christopher Jones II, of 1226 N. LBJ #4, filed for Place 4 on Monday, August 8. He named Harvey Miller as his campaign treasurer.
  • William (Bill)Taylor, of 105 Summerwood, filed for re-election in Place 4 on Wednesday, August 10. Barbara Castleberry will serve as his campaign treasurer.
  • Maurice (Moe) Johnson, of 117 N. Mitchell Street, filed for Place 4 on Friday, August 12. He appointed Bobby Warren as his campaign treasurer.

The City bond election will allow city voters to decide whether to sell $12.1 million in tax-supported General Obligation bonds to pay for street and road improvements, bicycle and pedestrian trails, sidewalks, a new Fire Station, the relocation of Municipal Court, and the purchase of parkland in the watershed above Spring Lake.

This will be the first joint election between the City of San Marcos and Hays County. The combined ballot will also include proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution.

The City Council voted in late 2004 to change municipal elections in San Marcos from May to November. This will be the first city election since the change in dates.

Voters will also use new electronic voting equipment for the first time in Hays County.  Hays County has purchased eSlate, a type of Direct Record Electronic (DRE), state-of-the-art voting equipment.

Voters can test the new equipment on line at http://elections.co.hays.tx.us/ .

The devices are also available for voters to try at the City Clerk’s office at City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins or at the Hays County Elections Office, 401-C Broadway.

The eSlate is accessible to the disabled, has an audio ballot reader for the visually impaired, and can accommodate curbside voting.

The calendar for the November election includes the following special dates:

  • August 8 – September 7, 2005: filing for a place on the General Election ballot for the City of San Marcos
  • September 9 – November 1, 2005: period to apply for a ballot by mail
  • October 24-November 4, 2005: period of early voting
