San Marcos City Council Place One member Kim Porterfield has a long history of service to the San Marcos community. Elected to the city council in November, 2007, she serves as Deputy Mayor Pro Tem and is the council’s general assembly representative to the Capital Area Planning Council Organization.

Porterfield moved to San Marcos in 1979 to attend Texas State University, where she studied journalism. She has almost 30 years of experience working with San Marcos schools, non-profit agencies and other community organizations. Among her honors and achievements are her induction into the San Marcos Women’s Hall of Fame in 2004, Texas State Employee of the Year in 2002, United Way of Hays County Volunteer of the Year, 2003 and Leadership San Marcos Class of 2002.

Her community service includes a term on the board of directors of the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce, where she also chaired the Education Committee for two years.

Porterfield, 47, is currently the president of the board of directors of the United Way of Hays County, a volunteer board she has served on for almost 20 years. She is a director on the board of the San Marcos Education Foundation, where she served a term as president and currently volunteers on the San Marcos High School Hall of Fame Planning Committee.

She is a member of the San Marcos League of Women Voters, where she formerly served on the board of directors, several public school parent teacher organizations, and the San Marcos High School Tennis Booster Club.

Porterfield served on the San Marcos CISD Master Plan Committee that lead to the formation of a group to help pass the school bond that resulted in the construction of new school facilities, including the new San Marcos High School.

She currently volunteers for Hernandez Intermediate School, the Girl Scouts, and Family For Life.

Porterfield was hired by Texas State University in 2001 and is currently the director of Community Relations, where she oversees Pack It Up and Pass It On, local college awareness programs, other community/university partnerships and chairs the Community Relations Council.

She was a member of the Texas State University Master Plan Steering Committee and currently serves on the Facilities Planning Committee, Service Learning Team and other interdisciplinary committees.

Porterfield was the Community Liaison for San Marcos CISD for eight years after starting her San Marcos career as a reporter and photographer for the San Marcos Daily Record.
She and her husband Winton live in Willow Creek and have two daughters: Carlie, a freshman at San Marcos High School and Sara Jo, a seventh grader at Miller Junior High School
